I have a Canon 6D. I use it most days. It has replaced my Canon 5D. I have been shooting Canon cameras since 1985. Yes 1985. That is way before digital photography. I am a lifelong Canon photographer.
So why do I shoot Canon?
Firstly, I am used to and very very familiar with how Canon DSLRs work.
I would have replaced my Canon 5D with a Canon 5D Mark 2 but went for the Canon 6D. The Canon 6D has the same sensor as the Canon 5D Mark 2. Which means the same image quality. Which is my top priority. The Canon 6D also has wi-fi and GPS built in – a first would you believe In Canon DSLRs. The 5D Mark 2, nor Mark 3, did not have these features. They appear finally in the new Canon 5D Mark 4.
And the Canon 6D was considerably cheaper than the Canon 5D. And a lot cheaper than the new 5D.
The 6D does not have all the bells and whistles of the 5D but to be honest I did not need those features.
Image quality was my priority. And still is.
The more I shoot the less interested I am in all those fancy features.
I guess I am getting old…..
And there is an important message within this post.
If you buy any Canon DSLRS it gives you the ability to capture great photos. I suggest you buy the best camera you can afford, but remember that what you stick on the front of the camera is equally, if not more important.
And definitely more important is what you point that camera and lens combination at.
I could use a camera costing lot more than my Canon 6D, but I didn’t. I have a camera with the same sensor as the 5D Mark 2 (not sure about the 5D Mark 3) and it takes great pictures.
My camera is awesome. It works for me.
I look forward to the 6D Mark 2 when it eventually appears, but am happy to wait.
I read and here lots about new cameras. That is all great and fine.
We all love new kit. I do, and would love to be able to have lots of the latest gear. But new gear will not give me better photographs.
This is my point. My Canon 6D is quite old. But it still takes excellent images.
My Canon 6D is my perfect camera for me, and for my architectural photography work.
Get the best camera you can. Buy the best lenses you can.
Then go out and.take photographs, whatever your camera is. The most important thing is to go about and take photographs.
I still love going out with my Canon 6D and making pictures. I do not think about the settings on my camera, it just does what I want it to day in an day out. The settings are set to work for me and they do. I have my own standard configuration and shooting style which I use for the vast majority of photographs I take. I am fortunate that I do not need to think about my settings, just what I am pointing my camera at.
So for all the talk about the latest new cameras and the amazing things they do I am happy with where I am and what I use.
I know there are cameras with better specifications that can do things my camera can’t but will they take better pictures?
No
I love my Canon 6D and will stick with it until it
- Fails, or
- Canon give me something else, or
- The Canon 6D Mark 2 is released.
So it looks like I will be buying a new camera, maybe next year.
How do I, or anyone come to that, take better pictures then?
Go out and shoot. Practise. Point that camera, no matter how old it is, at interesting things.
No-one outside of the photography world cares what camera you used to take a picture. None cares about the megapixels, the ISO, any of that stuff. Most people care about one thing and one thing only.

I will write about this in another post. I was digressing. My Canon 6D is getting old now. But it still works faultlessly and does what I want it to day in, day out.
