This is what the actual article looks like.

I have not decided what my next article is going to be on - I am thinking a wrap up of my series of architectural photography articles. I will have a think.

Stunning moody shot of Poole Quay boats at sunrise

Poole, Dorset

Poole, Dorset

This stunning sunrise shot was taken last week. I started at the lifting bridge, but the sky was overcast, so I walked slowly down the waters edge of Poole Quay. I have posted separately a couple of other shots taken on the walk down.

This shot I really like though.

Why?

The drama in the light, the depths in the colours. The movement in the clouds. The flatness of the water.

This is a single exposure image. A long exposure. 30 seconds, F16, ISO100.

I used a Lee Big Stopper to achieve this exposure time. Without it the exposure time would have been 1/30th of a second.

Which would be a completely different outcome. An ok shot. Not a shot like this.

I would have liked to have done a 5 bracket long exposure HDR take, but only managed to grab this one, correct exposure before the rain came in and the sun disappeared.

Moment gone.

I am delighted to have captured this image though, as I was walking back from the end of Poole Quay thinking I had finished for the morning, so this shot which I absolutely love is a massive bonus.

I walked back to the Poole Lifting Bridge with my camera still on my tripod ready just in case.

So I was prepared for this one, brief moment.

Poole Quay, Dorset - Stunning sunrise photo looking towards Sandbanks

Poole Quay sunrise

Poole Quay sunrise

Well this shot speaks for itself. An absolutely stunning sunrise.

i love the colours in this shot, and the fact I have managed to retain some texture in the water, rather than do the long exposure flatten the water completely trick.

I wanted to show the colours in all their glory, which I think I have done.  The sky was a big bright vibrant burst of colour, which was gone five minutes later.

This is the view from the far end of Poole Quay looking toward Sandbanks and Brownsea Island.

i set myself with this viewpoint and waited. Knowing the shot I wanted helped, as once I had sorted the composition and focus point all there was left to do was to wait and make sure the exposure was bang on.

i had to wait about half an hour for this spectacular light show, and only managed a couple of shots before it was all over. Thankfully my experience allows me just to take what I need, no need for spray and pray.

And I got what I was after, probably better than anticipated.

I am lucky to live in Dorset, and know lots of great locations to get great shots like this one.
