Panoramic picture of Sandbanks with lovely flat water and very soft muted colours

Lovely flat water and Brownsea Island in the background by Sandbanks Photographer Rick McEvoy

This is not a black and white image. No. There was very little colour. It was a grey day this week when I took this picture. Tuesday 26th actually.

I often drive home via Sandbanks, slightly out of my way but such a lovely place it is well worth the diversion.  And when I do I get pictures like this.

This picture was taken on my Canon 6D with Canon 17-40mm lens mounted on my Manfrotto 190 Go tripod

Exposure was 30 seconds, f14, ISO100.

Yes, 30 seconds in daylight (just after 5.30pm).

So for all those who understand the exposure triangle how is this possible?

With a Lee Big Stopper neutral density filter.

That's how.
