How My One Photo Rule Will Help You Take Better Photos

Have you ever heard of my one photo rule? Do you want to learn how to take better photos? And I am talking about a rule that costs you nothing and saves you heaps of time, effort, and frustration.

Take one photo. Do not take loads of photos from different angles and viewpoints. Stop, think, look around, and take the best photo possible. And then move on.

In this episode, I tell you.

  • What the one photo rule is.

  • How the one photo rule saves you time.

  • How the one photo rule helps you to take better photos.

  • How you can apply the one photo rule to your photography.

  • What if I use a phone to take photos and not a camera?

  • And finally, what I do.

All explained in plain English, without the irrelevant detail, in less than 27 (ish) minutes!

Photography Composition Tips And Techniques. How I Take Photos

The single most important thing we can do to improve our photos is to think about what we are taking photos of before we take them. We need to take the time to get the best composition every time we take a photo. The success or otherwise of any photo starts and ends with what is in the photo.

Photography composition is what you include in a photo, what the light is doing and how the elements within the composition relate to each other.

In this episode, I tell you

  • Why this is important

  • What I am looking for when I take a photo

  • How I take photos of buildings

  • How I photograph sunrises

  • How I photograph an island

  • What my photography superpowers are

I also tell you

  • What if you use a phone to take photos

  • What I do

  • How you can ask me a question

  • And a little bit about me.

All explained in plain English, without the irrelevant detail, in (much) less than 27 (ish) minutes!

What is not to love? How utterly splendid!

How To Take The Best Photos That You Can Every Time

Do you know what will happen if you try to get the best photo every time? Listen to this episode, and you will find out in less than 25 minutes.

To take the best photos that you can, stop, slow down, look around and think about what you are photographing. Think about what you are including in a photo, not including in a photo, how the elements relate, and think about the light. Get your composition, get all that technical stuff sorted. And then take the photo.

In this episode, I tell you.

  • What people care about when they look at your photos.

  • What people do not care about when they look at your photos.

  • What do you think about before you take a photo?

  • What if I use a phone to take photos and not a camera?

  • And finally, what I do.

All explained in plain English, without the irrelevant detail, in less than 27 (ish) minutes!

Why This Photography Podcast?

I'm Rick McEvoy—a professionally qualified photographer (ABIPP) based in England. I've been obsessed with photography since I was 13, which means I've had over 40 years to make mistakes and learn from them.

Professionally, I specialise in architectural and construction photography. But this photography podcast? It's all about helping beginners take better photos, whatever you're photographing.

I created Photography Explained because I couldn't find a photography podcast that explained things in plain English without endless irrelevant detail. No jargon. No fluff. Just enough information to help you understand something and improve your photography.

Think of it this way: I know how to use my TV but I don't have a clue how it actually works. If you're happy with this level of knowledge, then the Photography Explained Podcast is for you too.

What makes this different from other photography podcasts?

  • Based on what I've actually done and learned, not Google research

  • Plain English explanations—I teach how I talk

  • Focused on beginners who want to get better

  • Focused episodes that respect your time

  • Scripts available for every episode on my blog

  • Personal experience and honest advice

Everything you hear is all my own work. I shoot the photos, process them, write the scripts, record the episodes, and publish them myself. Authentic photography education from a working photographer who loves teaching this stuff.

Less Than 27 Minutes (ish)

Oh yes—one more thing. The plan was to explain one thing in less than 27 minutes, but it just never seems to happen. Episodes take as long as they need for me to explain that thing how I want it explained. But they're always focused, practical, and worth your time.
