Who am I?
I am Rick McEvoy, photographer, blogger, podcaster, and photography educator. I specialise in photographing buildings, including real estate photography. I also photograph architecture and construction, but that is it. Sure I do travel photography stuff when I am on holiday, but photographing buildings is what I do, write about, and teach.
I am professionally qualified in photography, being an Associate of the British Institute of Professional Photography (ABIPP), and have been learning and practising photography for well over 30 years now.
I am also professionally qualified in construction, being a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB), and have over 30 years of professional experience in construction.
So I have both buildings and photography covered nicely. I have many years of experience in both photography and all things buildings. And I have worked for many years with real estate agents, architects, interior designers and other industry specialists. And of course the odd contractor here and there! I am a very experienced photographer.
And I am completely self-taught.

Yep, this is what I do. No weddings, christenings, family portraits, or pets. Nothing that talks, breathes, moves, or answers back! I am an architectural photographer, a real estate photographer, a construction photographer. Basically, I photograph buildings.

A little bit more about my “How To Become A Real Estate Photographer” course if I may.
1 An introduction to real estate and real estate photography
I start at the beginning, assuming that you know next to nothing about real estate or real estate photography.
I start with what real estate is, and what real estate agents are. I then move on to real estate photography. This is a gentle, logical introduction to real estate photography.
It is important that we start at the beginning and just go through this in a logical order together.
So you will learn
- What real estate is
- What a real estate agent is
- What real estate photography is
2 Real estate photography business and marketing
There are two lessons in business and marketing. The first, and lesson two in the course, is “The Business Side Of Real Estate Photography.” This is important and is not always covered in the same depth that I do.
And as I will keep on saying, this is what I have learned, and is the bits that you need to know.
I cover “Marketing – How To Be Found And How To Get Work” in lesson 10 – I didn’t want to bombard you with all business stuff at the beginning – we are photographers after all!
But lesson two leads nicely into getting started, now that we know what the business is that we want to get started in.
3 Getting started in real estate photography
How do you get started in real estate photography? This was the problem I faced some years ago, but the good news is that I tell you exactly how you can get started. And the good news is that anyone can do this.
Oh sorry I should have said, I am assuming that you have the following
- a dslr camera/ mirrorless camera and wide-angle lens
- a basic knowledge of how they work
- the drive, time, and energy to do this and make a real go of it
Trust in what I tell you
Yes, you need to trust what I am teaching you and be willing to work hard at this. The more you put in the more you will get out of this course. I am giving you a framework that you can follow, and if you work at it you will start to make money from real estate photography.
But you can’t just take this course and wait for the work to come to you – no you have to make this happen. You have to put the work in, just like I did.
4 What photography gear you need for real estate photography
Well we all love photography gear, and we all love a bit of gear talk, don’t we? Well, not here – oh no. Not me.
In lesson four “Photography Gear – What I Use And What You Need To Know” I tell you what I use and no more. I tell you what the necessary equipment is, which is all that you will need. I tell you what I use, which isn’t a lot. And that is it for gear. I use what I use and everything else is a distraction.
There are a couple of very important threads that run through my course, which are to do with your attitude and approach. And this applies to photography gear.
You might not have been expecting that but there is a change of mindset that I will be teaching you.
5 Camera settings you need to take real estate photos
This is a big lesson, titled “What Camera Settings I Use, And More Importantly How And Why.” In this lesson I tell you the main camera settings that I use, and more importantly how and why I use them.
This is bespoke technical training specific to real estate photography. This is the good stuff. This is what I have learned over many years, and taking thousands of photos of buildings, explained setting by setting.
I really enjoyed recording this, as I get to share with you how I work, and my workflow which has been refined over many years and many hours of thought and practise.
This is bespoke training in how to take real estate photos. I wish I had found a course like this years ago. And the funny thing is that I was planning to write this lesson like this, it just happened naturally as I was writing.
6 How to take real estate photos
There are two parts to this, lesson six is “How To Prepare Properly For A Real Estate Shoot“, where I tell you how to prep like a pro for every shoot, and always turn up ready to take photos.
And lesson seven is this – “Doing The Shoot – The Fun Bit.” Yes really. With everything else already sorted doing the shoot really is the fun bit.
When I turn up for a shoot I am so well prepared that all I need to worry about is
· What I point my camera at
· Where I focus
· Is the cuppa after going to be nice?
That is the thing about being professional – the actual work bit really is the fun bit as everything else is taken care of.
7 How to process real estate photos
I do 99% of my processing in Lightroom. And in this lesson I explain all that good stuff, and take you into Lightroom with me to show you what I am actually talking about, using real estate photos that I have taken for clients.
I give you a running commentary on getting photos into Lightroom, processing, and all that good stuff.
I even pop into Photoshop to show you how to remove stuff – this is the only thing that I do in Photoshop.
And this is another way I save you time, by telling you what I do. If I don’t tell you something, then I don’t do it, and you don’t need to do it either.
8 How to build a sustainable, successful real estate photography business
Making money from real estate photography may seem like a daunting thing, especially if you have never done it before. Making money from photography is, to be honest, a surreal experience the first time you do it.
I will never forget my first job, and being paid by cheque would you believe?
Once you earn money from photography things change. And how you approach your photography needs to change.
And this is what I teach you – how to get that first paying job, but after that how to get more work and build something that will hopefully become the business that you want it to be, whatever that is. And not by just hammering social media, no I don’t do that. Sure it has its place but there are better things that we can do.
To shape your own real estate photography career you will need to build your own client base – this is all down to you but don’t worry I give you some great things to do to attract potential clients and keep the ones that you have.
And when you start off you might be doing floor plans as well, this is how I started off and to be honest with you it meant that I wasn’t earning that much but I learned a lot so don’t be put off by this in the beginning.
And once you are proficient in real estate photography it is not that big a leap into other related areas, such as architectural photography.
9 How to be the go-to real estate photographer
That is one for the course sorry. Well, I have to hold some things back now! But I will tell you how to get commercial clients coming back to you time after time asking you to create new real estate images for them.
Part-time/ full-time
This does not have to be a full-time thing. This can be a part-time thing, a side gig, whatever you want it to be. This is one of the wonderful things about real estate photography – it does not have to be all in unless you want it to be! The real estate industry is not going anywhere, there will always be a demand for great real estate photography.
And this is also one of the wonderful things about being a freelance photographer – you create the business that you want on your own terms.
Not on the list, but I want to mention this
What you need to become a professional photographer
Being paid for your photography is a step change from being an amateur photographer. Things change, and you need to change with them. I cover this in my course, but include other things that you need to have front of mind such as
- Service
- Mindset
- Attitude
- Preparedness
- Workflows
- Professionalism
If you want to make money from real estate photography you need to act in a professional manner, and this is at every step of the process. And you have to be a great communicator. This will be a change for most photographers who have been taking photos for their themselves only. These are new skills that you need to learn.
You have to think differently and work to the next level. This change in mindset is a big part of all of this.
Saving you time
What I tell you saves you lots of time, as I tell you everything that I do, so you don’t need to know anything else. I am quite literally telling you exactly what I do – do the same and you will be good to go taking real estate photos for money (as long as you follow the full course and apply and work at everything that I tell you).
Too much time is spent on things that we do not need to know, I do not do this.
Saving you money
If you take my advice you will get the gear that you need and no more. And you can then stop looking for more gear, looking for the next shiny thing, the next must have gadget. And that will save you time as well.
I have already spent years doing this so you don’t have to!
